2. Wises Maps are now draggable

Our online maps have been upgraded to make them dynamic, interactive and draggable – if you want to view an adjacent part of a map, just click and drag the mouse without releasing the button – no clicking and waiting for graphics to reload each time. You can use your mouse or the directional arrows to pan left, right, up and down to see areas that are hidden offscreen. You can also use the slider to zoom in and zoom out. If you want to enlarge the map to the full width of your screen (as shown below) click on the arrows at the left hand edge of the map.

TIP – to zoom in and out you can also use the '+' and '-' keys or your mouse's scroll wheel (if it has one).

3. Searching for a place

Finding a street address in New Zealand is now easier and more accurate. Under the "Find Place" tab begin typing the street address you need. This can start with a specific street number or can be suburb/town/city such as "Nelson". As you type a list of suggestions will be generated which will indicate that the place you need is in our database and save you from typing all of it in.

When you click 'Go!' the map will centre on the most likely search result, with a popup box displayed. If there is more than one possible match, a list will be displayed in the results panel beside the map. You can click on a result to see more information about the place and centre the map on it.

4. Searching for a business

There are two ways of finding businesses on Wises:
(1) Just like a street search – Under the "Find Business" tab type in business name or keyword, enter a location and click 'Go!'. If you don't enter a location the search will be performed on the area currently displayed by the map. Results will be displayed in the results panel just like a street search.

(2) Using the category menus – when a map is loaded, you can select business categories from the menus at the top of the map. This will overlay the map using icons to indicate businesses. When you drag the map or perform a new search, the 'category overlay' will be updated until you uncheck the categories. You can check a maximum of five categories at a time.

5. Getting driving directions

Wises can generate driving directions between any two places in New Zealand. The places can be addresses, businesses or a combination. You can enter the place names either in the "Find Place" tab (by clicking "Get Driving Directions") or by clicking the Directions "To Here" or "From Here" links that appear at the bottom of popup boxes and in the results panel under each search result. In the example below, we've used the popup box links. These will allow you to enter the origin/destination within the popup box. Click 'Go!' to show a route map and list of step-by-step directions. To print the map and directions properly, use the 'Print' link above the map. Using your browser's File > Print function will not work in this case.

6. Printing, Sending and Saving a Map

  • You can print a map or directions at any time, but remember to use the "Print" link above the map. Using your browser's File > Print function will not work!
  • You can also send a link to map via email at any time by clicking on the "Send" link above the map, and completing the form.
  • The best way to save a map is to copy and paste the map URL from your browser's address bar (eg. "http://www.wises.co.nz/l/auckland/") or simply add the page to your browser bookmarks. We don't currently support saving maps against a user account, but plan to include this feature in the future.
